A state bill banning child marriage was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom Wednesday after vocal support for the legislation from many women’s advocacy organizations.

Assembly Bill 1276 sets 18 as the minimum age to be married or enter a domestic partnership in California. Previously, California was one of three states with no age limit and allowed for a child to be married so long as they had parental consent and a judge’s approval.

“This victory belongs to the survivors who have courageously shared their experiences of abuse and exploitation time and time again to ensure that not one more child is subjected to the harms of child marriage,” said Assemblymember Gail Pellerin, D-Santa Cruz.
